Dial In Your Game with the TrackMan Altitude Feature

Golf is a game that is all about the details. When you think about it, that makes sense – this is a game where fractions of an inch around the hole can mean the difference between a birdie and a par, or a par and a bogey. If you are able to master the subtle details that influence your performance in this game, your scores are sure to fall.

In this post, we are talking about one of those details that actually has a major impact on how you play. The altitude that you are at when playing on any given golf course is going to impact the flight of the ball in specific ways, so preparing for those impacts is important if you are going to play your best. This is especially important if you are traveling to play golf in a place that is at a much different altitude than what you are used to. Here in New Jersey, of course, we are used to playing basically at sea level – if you take a trip to a mountain course, getting ready for that altitude change is critical.

How Altitude Changes Golf Shots

As you go up in altitude, the air gets thinner and has less of an impact on the flight of the ball. This does two things. First, it makes the ball fly farther, which can be wonderful – but it can also cause problems. You won’t mind seeing your drives fly much further than they normally do, but you won’t be so happy when your wedge shots soar over the green. Dialing in your distance control at altitude is possible, but it’s a challenge.

Also, the ball tends not to curve as much when playing at high altitudes, again due to the thinner air. That’s nice, of course, in terms of keeping you in play, but it can also be tricky if you are used to getting a certain amount of curve.

Getting Ready

Fortunately, TrackMan Altitude is a simple feature that makes it easy to prepare for high-altitude rounds of golf. When you go into the Practice Range area, you can select Target Practice, and then into Settings. On that screen, you’ll see a tab labeled Altitude, and you can enter the value that you would like based on the course you are going to be playing. Once you see how the altitude alters your results in terms of carry distance and other stats, you can have a good idea of what adjustments will be needed in the real world. You can also find how more details about this feature with our CaveTip on Altitude.
